Background

Kofi Opare was born in Mampong Ghana. His family moved to South Africa and New Jersey, before settling in Niagara Falls, Canada. Opare always had a passion for sports, and before getting into soccer, he played cricket in South Africa. His childhood dream was to become a professional cricket player.

Upon moving to the U.S, Opares’ love for soccer grew and he initially started playing as a hobby after school hours - the rest is history.

college

In 2009, Opare received a full athletic scholarship to attend the University Of Michigan. He played a crucial role in the team advancing to the College Cup (semi-finalists).

Opare was also a member of the African Student Association to promote Black and African American culture by helping organize activities and events. He graduated early from the University of Michigan with a Double Degree in Brain Behaviors, Cognition & Neuroscience and African & African American Studies.

professional

In 2013, Opare was selected in the MLS Superdraft by Los Angeles Galaxy. He made his professional debut for the team in 2013, in the CONCACAF Champions League.

In 2014, Opare was traded to D.C. United, where he went on to spend five years with the club. In the 2017 season, he was named D.C. United’s Defensive MVP.

After five years with D.C. United, Opare signed with the Colorado Rapids.
